Multiple constraints on urban bird communication: both abiotic and biotic noise shape songs in cities

چکیده

Abstract Ambient noise can cause birds to adjust their songs avoid masking. Most studies investigate responses a single source (e.g., low-frequency traffic noise, or high-frequency insect noise). Here, we investigated the effects of both anthropogenic and on vocalizations four common bird species in Hong Kong. Common Tailorbirds (Orthotomus sutorius) Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus) sang at higher frequency urban areas compared peri-urban areas. Red-whiskered Bulbuls (Pycnonotus jocosus) shifted only first note song upwards. Swinhoe’s White-eye (Zosterops simplex) vocalization changes were correlated with level, but did not differ between populations. Insect caused Sparrow reduce maximum, peak frequency, overall bandwidth vocalizations. also led reduction maximum bulbuls. The presence affected sound Sparrows; areas, they no longer increased minimum when sounds present. These results highlight complexity soundscape high- ambient may make it difficult for signal masking while still maintaining fitness noisy cities.

Urban noise and the cultural evolution of bird songs.

In urban environments, anthropogenic noise can interfere with animal communication. Here we study the influence of urban noise on the cultural evolution of bird songs. We studied three adjacent dialects of white-crowned sparrow songs over a 30-year time span. Urban noise, which is louder at low frequencies, increased during our study period and therefore should have created a selection pressure...

Bird song and anthropogenic noise: vocal constraints may explain why birds sing higher-frequency songs in cities.

When animals live in cities, they have to adjust their behaviour and life histories to novel environments. Noise pollution puts a severe constraint on vocal communication by interfering with the detection of acoustic signals. Recent studies show that city birds sing higher-frequency songs than their conspecifics in non-urban habitats. This has been interpreted as an adaptation to counteract mas...

Biotic and abiotic constraints that facilitate host exclusivity of Gondwanamyces and Ophiostoma on Protea.

Estimations of global fungal diversity are hampered by a limited understanding of the forces that dictate host exclusivity in saprobic microfungi. To consider this problem for Gondwanamyces and Ophiostoma found in the flower heads of Protea in South Africa, we determined the role of various factors thought to influence their host exclusivity. Results showed that various biotic and abiotic facto...

Abiotic and biotic elicitors’ effects on secondary metabolites biosynthesis of periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus (Linn.) G. Don)

Based on recent statistical survey, the cancer is the third important factor in Iran mortality. Vinblastine and vincristine alkaloids are dominantly biosynthesized in the aerial parts of periwinkle, broadly applied for cancer treatment. Therefore, over production of these alkaloids by using the biotechnological approaches is inevitable. Since the terpenoid indole alkaloids (TIAS) biosynthesis p...
